For the past
nineteen years, the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing has been a primary
gathering forum for applied computer scientists, computer engineers, software
engineers, and application developers from around the world. SAC 2005 is
sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing
whose mission is to further the interests of the computing professionals engaged
in the development of new computing techniques and applications areas and the
transfer of computing technology to new problem domains.
SAC 2005 is hosted by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology,
Socorro, NM. It consists of multiple tracks, one of which is the Mobile
Computing and Applications track.
Riding on recent
technological advancements in 3G communication infrastructures, hardware
handheld devices, programming standards such as J2ME, Symbian and SOAP and the emergence of
killer applications in both research and commercial settings, the area of mobile
computing is gaining increasing importance. Mobile computing technologies have
evolved over the past 10 years into an inter-disciplinary research area.
Applications of mobile computing accelerate rapidly in recent years following
the development of devices for "wearable" computers and the "pervasive"
computing paradigm. The unique characteristics and issues presented in a mobile
environment have already motivated diverse research areas, spanning from
protocols for mobile computing to middleware services to facilitate better
integration of mobile services to existing network infrastructure. This can be
done in the context of mobile commerce based applications, with integrated
technologies drawn from diversified field such as wireless communications,
sensor networks, global positioning systems, and geographical and spatial database systems. This track is
dedicated to draw upon research efforts and expertise from different areas of
researches for better synergy. We would like to bring forth not only those core
technologies driving the research, but also important applied research to
realize the benefits of anywhere, any place and anytime computing. Papers are solicited for the following
representative topic areas (but not restricted to): Author(s) are encouraged to submit electronic
copies of their papers (in postscript or pdf format) to the Track Chairs at
their conference account at sac05mca@comp.polyu.edu.hk by September
3, 2004.
Those who cannot submit electronic copies must submit six (6) laser-quality
printed copies to: Hong Va Leong

Original papers from the above-mentioned or other related areas will be considered. Each submitted paper will be fully referenced and undergo a double-blind review process by at least three referees for quality, correctness, originality, and relevance. Notification and reviews will be communicated via e-mail.
All papers should be submitted electronically in the format of either postscript or pdf. Hardcopies are allowed only for those without access to the Internet. To ensure double-bind review, author(s) name(s) and address(es) must NOT appear in the paper body. Any self-reference should be in the third person. Each paper must not exceed 4,000 words (approximately 15 pages, double-spaced). Papers that exceed this length risk rejection on the grounds of length alone. In addition, for each submitted paper, a separated cover page (preferably in plain ASCII text) should be sent to the e-mail address: sac05mca@comp.polyu.edu.hk including the paper title, abstract, list of keywords, and list of authors with full names and postal address, telephone numbers, fax numbers, and e-mail addresses. One of the authors must be designated as the primary contact point to receive the notification at the time of the paper submission. At least one of the authors of the accepted paper must register for the conference and present the paper. The accepted papers will be published in the ACM SAC 2005 proceedings. A set of selected papers, which did not get accepted as full papers, will be accepted as poster papers and will be published as extended two-page abstracts in the symposium proceedings. Submission must be received by Friday, September 3, 2004.
