Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

The Research Grant Council (RGC) of the Hong Kong University Grants Committee (UGC) is committed to promoting world-class research in Hong Kong.  Through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), Hong Kong’s outstanding universities offer research opportunities in a broad range of PhD programmes, with generous stipends and excellent support for the best and brightest students in the world.  Established by the RGC in 2009, the prestigious HKPFS has brought more than one thousand top students from over sixty countries/regions to Hong Kong to undertake PhD studies.  Successful candidates of HKPFS will be awarded the following:

  • An annual stipend of HK$309,600 up to three years; and
  • An annual conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$12,900 up to three years offered by Hong Kong RGC.

PolyU and the Department aim at attracting talents from all corners of the globe to pursue their PhD studies here, therefore in addition to HKPFS award, we also provide the following to the awardees:

  • Tuition scholarships for the normal study period offered by PolyU; 
  • A stipend of HK$25,800/month and travel allowance of HK$12,900/year during the fourth year of study for awardees with a four-year normal study period offered by PolyU;
  • Guaranteed hall accommodation for two years of study; and
  • Sponsorship for exchange in top US and European universities for 6 to 12 months.
