  • Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

    Unique in Hong Kong, the Department offers its own Broad Discipline of Computing that includes three programmes with diversified scopes of curriculum design suiting different students’ interests. Specific niches have been introduced in each programme, which empowers students with the competitive edge they will need on their career paths.

    Programme Highlights

    Flexibility to Choose the Specific Programme

    The unique Broad Discipline of Computing allows students to fix their study in computing while giving them the flexibility to select the specific programme depending on their interest later. After their common first year of study, students can choose one of the three awards: the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computing, the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Enterprise Information Systems or the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Information Technology.

    Professional Recognition for Computer Science Programmes

    All the three programmes under Broad Discipline of Computing have been granted provisional accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

    A computer science programme accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) shall not only meet the academic requirements for Member of the HKIE in the Information Discipline.  In addition, HKIE’s full signatory status to the Seoul Accord entails its accredited computer science programmes are also recognised by the other signatories under the Seoul Accord.  Seoul Accord is a multi-lateral agreement among agencies from various countries responsible for accreditation or recognition of territory-level computing and IT-related qualifications.

    Graduates of the HKIE accredited computer science programmes are therefore eligible to apply for Graduate Membership in the HKIE and to join the HKIE training scheme in the discipline of Information (INF).  Moreover, their qualifications are also recognised by other countries under the Seoul Accord, including Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.

     

     

    International Learning Activities

    The Department offers a wide range of international learning activities such as academic exchange with credit transfer, overseas attachment to top universities and international service-learning to enhance students’ global outlook. 

     

    Internship / Work-Integrated Education (WIE) Opportunities

    The Department provides many local and overseas internship / Work-Integrated Education opportunities for students’ career development.

     

    Practical Computing Training Workshops

    The Department has been working closely with industrial partners to establish joint laboratories, such as PolyU-Microsoft Smart Computing Laboratory, to support teaching and learning activities. Workshops on emerging trends and technologies are regularly offered to equip students with practical computing knowledge and skills required by today’s rapidly advancing computing industry as well as enhance their hands-on learning experience.

     

    Exposure to Innovative and Exciting Technologies

    The Department frequently enhances the teaching and learning environment by bringing in new facilities to help students better master the fast changing digital trend and technologies. For example, the Department has recently installed Virtual Reality (VR) / Augmented Reality (AR) system for supporting game development teaching and research activities.

     

     

     

    Full Time Undergraduate Programme

    • BSc(Hons) in Computing

      The BSc(Hons) in Computing emphasizes on applying computing theories and programming methodologies to design and develop fast and smart computing systems and software.

    • BSc(Hons) in Enterprise Information Systems

      The BSc(Hons) in Enterprise Information Systems emphasizes on applying computing technologies and enterprise information to develop and manage business solutions.

    • BSc(Hons) in Information Technology

      The BSc(Hons) in Information Technology emphasizes on integrating computing devices, systems and software to design and implement IT architectures for advanced applications.

    Part Time Undergraduate Programme

  • Programme Characteristics
    • Common first semester/year: students admitted to the Broad Discipline do not need to decide on the final award in the first year of study, but only need to select their study paths in the second year.
    • Flexibility of study: students are allowed to transfer between awards within the Broad Discipline before they graduate.
    • Rich study pathways: the core credits of the programme is on the low side, providing a lot of rooms for students to take on various minor study paths in their own interested disciplines, such as Business Administration, Financial Services, Social Science, or other Engineering disciplines. They may also take additional subjects in Computing to strengthen and specialise in one or more technical streams.
    • Applied and practical: the curriculum covers up-to-date practical skills, both in content and teaching methodology, e.g. iPhone technology.
    • Master's degree: the Department provides articulation to students for admission into the Master's programme it offers. They can receive a Master's degree with one extra year of study.
    • Recognition and Scholarship: many departmental scholarships are available for students, recognising their academic and non-academic performance.
  • Programme Structure

    All students are admitted to the Broad Discipline of Computing. In the first year, they study a common set of subjects to lay their foundation to university study, and a taste of the broad discipline. In the second year, they can select the individual awards and study the corresponding content. All three awards feature the minor option and an individual or a group integrative capstone project in the final year.
