First Prize in The 5th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition

Supervised by Prof. George Baciu, our Year 3 undergraduate student, Mr Toby Chui Cheuk Long, has brought glory to the Department of Computing by winning the First Prize in the category of Information Technology at The 5th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition with the project entitled “Distributed & Highly Scalable Cloud Storage System Architecture with Web Desktop Environment” on 25 May 2019.

In the competition, both individual or team participants were required to submit a research thesis or an invention under one of the four categories: 1) Information Technology; 2) Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering; 3) Life Sciences; and 4) Mathematics and Physics/ Mechanics and Control Systems. After the initial screening, the shortlisted contestants had to showcase and present their projects at the Hong Kong Science Park for final assessment. The judging criteria included reliability and validity, social impact, meticulousness and skills.

As the demand for non-business oriented cloud platforms is growing, distributed and highly scalable cloud systems will be integral components of the future computing platforms that power the next generation edge applications such as health care. In this project, Toby has created a new kind of cloud system architecture that is portable, elastic, distributed and highly scalable. Providing the bedrock for cloud-based IoT and low cost digital interfaces via an easy-to-use Human-Computer Interface, Toby’s invention is expected to satisfy most of the consumers or organizations’ needs in elderly health care and monitoring which requires cloud technology.

With his outstanding performance in this competition, Toby is nominated to participate in the “Challenge Cup” National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest that will be held in Beijing to compete with other talents from the Mainland China.

Congratulations to Toby and his supervisor Prof. George Baciu.
