COMP will open Joint Smart Computing Laboratory with Microsoft to drive Smart Computing development

The Department and Microsoft have announced to jointly establish the PolyU-Microsoft Smart Computing Laboratory. The announcement ceremony of the Lab was held on 18 December 2014 and officiated at by Mr Nicholas Yang, Executive Vice President of PolyU, Prof. Jiannong Cao, Chair Professor and Head of Department of Computing and Mr Horace Chow, General Manager of Microsoft Hong Kong.

With total donation amount up to HK$10 million from Microsoft, the partnership spans seven areas over a three-year period:

1. Establishment of a Smart Computing Laboratory facility (which is to be established by the end of academic year 2014/15)

2. Joint applied research projects on smart computing

3. Software, cloud services and devices sponsorship

4. Work-integrated education workshops

5. Professional consultancy

6. Annual competition and awards

7. International exchange and exposure

This partnership will facilitate teaching and learning, research and work-integrated education in the areas of cloud computing, big data computing, human-centered computing and mobile computing, and also inspire students with experience in applying these smart computing technologies in real-life usage scenarios.
