Message from Interim Head


Welcome to the Department of Computing (COMP) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).

COMP was established in 1974 as the first department offering computing education in the territory, nurturing professional talents to support the society’s advancement.

Computing technology has been the core of many leading edge inventions. The countless innovations and development in computing have made so many changes in every aspect of our lives including the way we think, live, and work as well as the way we socialize and play. Science and technology have come to an age where different disciplines must work together and computing is definitely the conjunction to create synergy for new breakthroughs that can bring us to much higher grounds. In COMP, we carry out our works and contribute to the society through our Philosophy of CARE.

For our students, CARE is translated into preparing them to face Challenges in life not only through quality Academic education, but also Recognitions through extra-curriculum activities to give them a sense of belonging and the confidence to Excel in life.

For our academic staff, CARE is translated into creating a Conducive working environment to realize their full potentials. We will Align the strategic directions of the Department with the strengths of our staff, and synergize their expertise to produce impactful Research output and strive for Excellence.  In the forefront of research, we are determined to strengthen our position internationally.

For the community at large, CARE is translated into our Commitment to improve the everyday lives of All people, especially those in need with Respect and Enthusiasm. CARE is also translated into Collaboration with both industry and academic partners to Advance the society as a whole using our R&D capacity and Expertise.

We are particularly proud of our alumni, which is one of the largest computing group in Hong Kong.  We are dedicated to strengthen a vibrant and close connection with them. Our graduates are the witnesses in our coming of age, and they will continue to be our most valued assets in the years to come.

Looking into the future, we want to be in the forefront of technological development and knowledge discovery in line with PolyU’s motto “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”. We will continue to nurture the leaders of tomorrow. We have every confidence in our students and our staff to contribute to the society in the best way they can.
