IIT Delhi Touchless Palmprint Database (Version 1.0)

The palmprint research has attracted lot of attention from the researchers and generated tons of papers and technical reports. The PolyU palmprint database is widely employed palmprint database which is now available in public domain for the researchers. However, this database employs user-pegs to restrict the hand-pose and image scale variations. The usage of pegs in imaging is highly inconvenient to the users but helps in restricting the palmprint texture image variations. This is one of the key reason that researchers achieve significantly higher performance (recognition accuracy close to 100%) on on the PolyU palmprint image database version 2.0. In order to support the development of more user-friendly and reliable palmprint identification, the Biometrics Research Laboratory at IIT Delhi has been collecting touchless palmprint image database since July 2006. The objective is to establish large scale palmprint database, which has been acquired using completely touchless imaging setup and make it available in the public domain for researchers.

Brief Description

The IIT Delhi palmprint image database consists of the hand images collected from the students and staff at IIT Delhi, New Delhi, India. This database has been acquired in the IIT Delhi campus during July 2006 - Jun 2007 using a simple and touchless imaging setup. All the images are collected in the indoor environment and employ circular fluorescent illumination around the camera lens. The currently available database is from 230 users, all the images are in bitmap (*.bmp) format. All the subjects in the database are in the age group 12-57 years. Seven images from each subject, from each of the left and right hand, are acquired in varying hand pose variations. Each of the subject is provided with live feedback to present his/her hand in the imaging region. The touchless imaging results in higher image scale variations. The acquired images have been sequentially numbered for every user with an integer identification/number. The resolution of these images is 800 ´ 600 pixels and all these images are available in bitmap format. In addition to the original images, 150 ´ 150 pixel automatically cropped and normalized palmprint images are also available.
