The Software Engineering (SE) Lab was established in 1999, and its members have participated in vast numbers of research projects and consultancies in which the university and industry jointly collaborated. We have received grants totaling more than HK$36 million. Our studies are far-reaching and varied, and have included data mining, document management, the ISO 9001 certification package, metrics, mobile computing, OO systems, outsourcing, software process improvement, RFID applications, SE education, intelligent home systems, software quality assurance, software testing, tutoring systems, and workflow automation. The laboratory has established new ties with collaborators in academia and industry in both Hong Kong and around the world, and performed SE research that has had a big impact on the local IT industry.

Highlights of Achievements

  • According to a recent article published in the June 2007 issue of the Communications of the ACM magazine, we are ranked 1st in Hong Kong, 2nd in Asia, and 36th in the world. We are among the world's top 50 SE institutes in terms of number of publications in top SE journals and conference proceedings. Despite relatively limited resources, we are ranked among such universities and institutions as MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Maryland at College Park, IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Centre, University of British Columbia, University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, etc. (Source: Ren, J. & Taylor, R.N. (June 2007). Automatic and Versatile Publications Ranking for Research Institutions and Scholars. Communications of the ACM, Vol. 50, Issue 6, pp. 81-85.)
  • Based on our research, we have developed various methodologies, tools, and practices such as: CMMFT (Capability Maturity Model R Fast Track), CMMI R Online Assessment Tool (COAT), DocSys (Document System), IHG (the Smart Home Gateway), ISO 9001 and its application to software, PeT (Performance Test Tool, Quality Management Platform (QMP), SELOR (Software Engineering Learning Objects Repository), ASSISTS(assistive technologies for the physically disabled), and the Workflow Automation Tool for Project Management (royalties received).
