Dr Shiu was born in Hong Kong, and received his university education in Hong Kong and UK. He obtained his degrees from City University of London, Newcastle Upon Tyne University and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1985, 1986 and 1997 respectively. Dr Shiu has over 30 years of working experience in business, industry and universities. He started his career as a computing programmer, system analyst and then computer manager in various organizations before joining the HK Polytechnic University in 1990, and since then, he teaches and researches in artificial intelligence and computer games. He has written one graduate level textbook in Case-based reasoning, i.e., “Foundation of Soft Case-Based Reasoning” published by John Wiley in 2004, and successfully supervised 50 graduate students including 3 PhD and 3 MPhil students. He had published over 20 refereed journal papers, and over 70 conference papers and book chapters. He also carried out consultancy projects with organizations such as the HK Police and the HK Marine Police Force, Tuen Mun Yan Oi Tong and a few departments in the HK SAR Government. He also served as external examiner and moderator for the HK College of Technology, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) and Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA), as well as a programme committee member for many international conferences, and guest editor for several journal special issues. Dr Shiu received the President’s Award for Excellent Performance / Achievement 2007 / 2008 - Team Award, for his services in consultancy services to the community and computer games education.
