MSc in Information Systems (MScIS) in Xian

This award aims to provide management and business professionals in Mainland China to study the MSc in information systems programme in Xian and Suzhou. This programme is jointly organized by the Department of Computing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Xian Jiaotong University since 2002. The normal duration of the programme is two years with intensive classes on weekends.

It aims to provide management and business professionals in Mainland China with the knowledge, skills and confidence in the application of information systems within an organization, and to enable them:

  • To identify appropriate IT driven opportunities and incorporate these into the strategic thinking process;
  • To develop a framework appropriate to the organizational culture to facilitate the alignment and interplay of organizational strategies with information systems and E- commerce strategies;
  • To take an active part in the decision making process surrounding the use and development of IS with a particular emphasis on the management of change which may result from the transfer of technology within the organization;
  • To act as internal consultants within their organizations with regard to the evaluation of IS/IT applications, their development and implementation, to improve organizational practices, productivity and profitability;
  • To manage quality issues in the processes related to effective information systems planning, development and implementation;
  • To maintain and further develop standards of professional practice with regard to the organizational planning processes for effective IS/IT utilization.

The institutional learning outcomes of taught postgraduate programmes consist of:

A. Professional competence of specialists/leaders of a discipline/profession:

Graduates of PolyU taught postgraduate programmes will possess in-depth knowledge and skills in their area of study and be able to apply their knowledge and contribute to professional leadership.

Graduates of PolyU taught postgraduate programmes will be able to think holistically and analytically in dealing with complex problems and situations pertinent to their professional practice. They will be versatile problem solvers with good mastery of critical and creative thinking skills, who can generate practical and innovative solutions.

Graduates of PolyU taught postgraduate programmes will have an enhanced capability for continual professional development through inquiry and reflection on professional practice.

D. Computer ethics and responsibilities:

Graduates of the Scheme will have critical understanding of ethical problems and issues related to computer profession, technology governance and social responsibilities.

  • Programme Characteristics
    • It is a programme offered in Mainland China (Xian and Suzhou).
    • It is a part-time programme and students attend classes on weekends.
    • Up to 15 credits can be transferred so that students can graduate earlier.
    • All first-year students are eligible to apply for the Alan Turing Entrance Scholarship.
    • PolyU alumni can apply for the COMP Alumni Scholarship in a value of 15% of the tuition fee of subjects taken in the first year of study
    • Programme Structure (30 credits)

      The programme requires the completion of 30 credits. Students can choose from the following study patterns:

      (A) Complete 7 subjects (at least 5 must be core subjects) plus a dissertation; or

      (B) Complete 8 subjects (at least 6 must be core subjects) plus a project; or

      (C) Complete 10 subjects (at least 6 core subjects).

    • Programme Highlights
      • Mode of delivery
        • The programme is delivered in English. Supplementary material and instructions in Chinese will be given whenever appropriate to aid effective learning, the total number of credits required for graduation is 30.

        • Two years with intensive classes held on weekends.
      • Scholarships
        • There are several scholarships offered to students, they will have opportunities to apply for such scholarships after admission.

      • General Entrance requirements
        • Bachelor's degree from an institution that is recognised by PolyU.
      • English language requirement
        • A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 for the Internet-based test or 550 for the paper-based test; or
        • An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

          Individual cases will be considered on their own merit by the departments concerned. Applicants may be required to attend interviews or tests to further demonstrate their language proficiency.
